Politricks, Money and Horse Racing

Del Mar, Calif –  A recent report from the ‘San Diego Union Tribune’ showcases the longtime political controversy surrounding horse fatalities and it’s ties to political campaigns. A recent contribution filed from the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club along with the California Secretary of State’s office shows us just how valuable horse racing is.

Del Mar Horse

Major Donor Independent Expenditure Committee Statement from Del Mar Thoroughbred Club for $27,500.00

With so many abrupt acute deaths to race horses, an investigation was led to find out if horses were given hormones to win races and make large sums of money. Reports linked Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert to the death of seven horses on a list of as many as 36 horses that died in California in the past two years. One horse was owned by Mike Pegram, chairman of the Thoroughbred Owners of California and Three of the horses were owned by Kaleem Shah.

Reports from U-T San Diego say that Pegram’s 4-year-old colt, CJ Russell died last year after completing a June 15th race at Hollywood Park. The necropsy report stated that it was Baffert’s “fourth horse to collapse/die for this trainer in less than one year.”

U-T San Diego has requested necropsy information from all race horses that have died in the last 18 months in the State of California. The California Horse Racing Board reported that 19 horses have died acutely from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012. Baffert, a three-time winner of the Kentucky Derby based at Santa Anita, could not be reached for comment.

Blackfeet Braves playing in San Diego

SAN DIEGO - May 1, 2013 take a trip with psychedelic indie rock band ‘Blackfeet Braves‘. The San Diego born and Los Angeles based band is coming back to their hometown to perform at ‘The Void’, formerly Bar Eleven.

This past February, band members Julian Ducatenzeiler, Tony Malacara, Cameron Gartung and Shane Stotsenberg recently released there self-titled LP Blackfeet Braves on Lollipop Records. With roots in Southern California and a steady stream of psychedelic rock it’s no doubt they received the attention from SURFER magazine, Songs like ’Trippin like I Do’ and ‘Cloud 9’ were featured in SURFER magazine’s Hot 100 surf video as it graced the video sections of surfer’s Balaram Stack, Nat Young, Dane Zaun and Cristobal De Col.

Originally from Temecula, Calif., Ducatenzeiler made his way south to Escondido, Calif., in 2007. During that time he was playing in a post indie punk band and was looking to start anew and play more 60’s psychedelic rock-n-roll. He called his friend Dan over for a practice session in what he calls the, “Lock-Out Spot”.

That same afternoon, Julian recalls Dan bringing over Tony and Joey who were some friends who also jammed. “All of us had songs we had brought and wanted to play, so we played them and just jammed all afternoon and it just flowed thus forming the band”. Like all newly formed rock-n-roll bands they endured a period of growing pains, leaving only Julian and Tony as the remaining original band members. Shane and Cameron joined in late 2011.

The video for the hit song “Trippin like I Do” was shot by Julian, Dan and Dan’s girlfriend Lauren near Cardiff State Beach in Encinitas, Calif. Using his iPhone and the ‘Super 8 App’ Julian and friends filmed the entire video in one day and went straight to Tony’s house to edit the video to what you see now.

The Blackfeet Braves moved to Los Angeles, California in Oct 2012 and currently are touring the American southwest as Moon-Block Party with JJUUJJUU. Look out for the new video for “Oh So Fine.” They will be releasing there self-titled LP Blackfeet Braves‘ on vinyl to come out late Spring early Summer of 2013 and a new 6 song EP they recorded to drop in late summer or early fall of 2013. Most recently the band was featured in the Examiner for there San Diego showing!
