It contains everything needed to support the microcontroller; simply connect it to a computer with a USB cable or power it with a AC-to-DC adapter or battery to get started. The Arduino software includes a serial monitor which allows simple textual data to be sent to and from the Arduino board. A SoftwareSerial library allows for serial communication on any of the Duemilanove’s digital pins.
