Bud Light GAL KEG : Beer & Cider – Kegs – Domestic Beers : BevMo!
I asked and they said if I dont return the keg, its basically my keg. Thanks everyone for enlightening me in the errors of my ways. This is why I came here.
I hadn’t considered that it was theft, and that is absolutely not what im trying to do. Ill be going to local microbreweries and scrap yards. I have no intention bbevmo being a stain on this hobby, and I want to rightly support getting equipment through the proper channels. I guess i followed some flawed logic, and didnt consider that the 40 dollar deposit is an incentive to return it, not an incentive to keep it.
Again, thanks everyone who commented for giving me the right advice. This is why i respect and value this subs opinions and perspectives. If you don’t mind being a thief. Regardless of what the faceless person on the phone said, you’re not “buying” a keg, your borrowing it, and bevno returning it is stealing.
The employee at BevMo is ignorant of the law. The deposit is merely a deposit, and does not make the keg yours.

The deposit is not close to the cost of the keg. Keeping the keg would be criminal theft. I love how we end up having this discussion in the sub, and it’s always random which side is going to win out.
Sometimes I get downvoted for saying it’s theft, other times it’s the highest comment. I have no intentions of being a thief, so i wont keegs going this route.
Legal, cheaper, and you get to do the whole reduce reuse recycle thing and pretend you’re a good person.

I think adventures in homebrewing has them that low sometimes. Kegs are expensive and have an extremely long life span for the brewery.
Especially when each keg costs the brewery hundreds of dollars. The deposit on the keg does not cover the cost of replacing the keg. It’s probably better to not steal from your favorite small brewery that barely makes profit as it is anyways. Rather than go this route, which as most posters have pointed out is theft, I’d recommend contacting a small to medium size brewery and asking about damaged kegs.
