This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Jun 15, Bob Newman rated it it was amazing. Russian Romeos Clik in Stix Bunin definitely had the genius of description and literary construction possessed by the older generations of Russian writers. As an exile from his homeland after the revolution, he also preserved in loving detail upper-class Russian life and its accoutrements for posterity. Snow, carriages and coachmen, servants, samovars, and country houses.
He wrote many kinds of stories, as well as poetry, but this book is a collection of forty stories about love. Very few Russian Romeos Clik in Stix Bunin definitely had the genius of description and literary construction possessed by the older generations of Russian writers.
Very few of them end well, most have a desperate or fatalistic tone. On top of that, mores have changed, at least in the West.

“Dark Avenues” by Ivan Bunin
Many of the stories concern love affairs conducted at country estates or in summer dachas. Other girls from the lower class are just forgotten, a prostitute is murdered “Miss Clara”husbands kill wives, lovers kill rivals, there are suicides and seductions galore, young love, old love, careless love, the faithful and the faithless. Then there is the mystery of why we are attracted to someone, perhaps someone entirely inappropriate “A Riverside Inn”.
Perhaps it would have been better to have a book with all sorts of themes instead of only harping on varieties of love. Dark Avenues indeed if life is so gloomyif death cancels all the colors and warmth of existence, should we look upon life as always a tragedy? Why not be glad to be alive? Love should banish angst and gloom, not encourage it.
I guess I was not entirely satisfied with these stories, even if happy endings are not always realistic.
