Contrary to the Hindutva-RSS-type abuse and allegations, Debrahmanising Hostory, as its subtitle announces, is about the tradition of dominance and resistance in Indian society. It argues that every society has an axis of inequality, and in India, it is the structure of caste rooted in the ideology and politics of brahmanism.

The term “brahmanism” is used here cogently and consistently as a historical-ideological weapon of multidimensional dominance. Uncovering the complex, convoluted face of brahmanism from ancient to modern times, the author not only succeeds in cornering the “dominance,” but also generates new materials, thoughts and energy for the emancipatory philosophy and politics.

No wonder, this book is loved and loathed in equal measure. Since without caste there is no Hindu, it is not difficult to guess who loves it and who loathes.

In this history of the silenced majority of India–the “lowered” castes as Mani calls them–the author brings alive an impressive tradition of resistance, resurrecting many known and unknown champions of peoples’ causes, from Buddha and Kabir to Phule and Ambedkar. Many myths, both ancient and modern, lie shattered here. With concrete facts and compelling arguments, the book deconstructs many elitist myths about India, caste and Hinduism.

In histkry end, Mani argues that devrahmanising the long-drawn tradition of resistance, “caste consciousness and the brahmanical mindset persist” in modern garb, in defiance of democratic ideals, causing India to remain one of the most unequal and unjust societies. Overall, this work is one of hisory kinds–a challenging and coherent history writing from the margins in the context of brahmanical dominance and its resistance. I have not read this book so this is not really a review of the debrahmannising.

But I am familiar with author’s other writings and background so want to make sure that readers are aware of author’s hidden agenda. Mani is part of for an organization called Truthseekers and is listed as National Coordinator, Publications on the organization’s web site [ Based on list of members on the web site, the group clearly appears to be a US funded Christian evangelical group with the primary intent of converting Indian to Christianity.

In fact, the approach of the organization is highly deceptive. It doesn’t try to convert people directly to Christianity. It takes 2 step approach where first step is to move people away from Hinduism to a single god and from there to full conversion to Christ as a second step.

It is clear from the site that the organization is resorting to all kinds of fabrication of history to decieve uneducated masses and convert them Christianity.
