Not only that the patron goddess of Carthak seems to want something from her as well. She heads off to Carthak to negotiate peace with those whom she has been in one sort of battle or another for the series thus far.
In a fantasy setting. Return to Book Page. Meanwhile, the Tortallan party is planning to leave Carthak, but Numair will not leave his “magelet” behind. Contents [ show ]. As a veteran of the Lioness Quartet, I know that in Tortall the question is not whether or not the gods are real but how long it will take one of them to show up, and this is the book in which at least one of them becomes a driving force. The second, Wolf Speaker, bored me. Major major redemption for the yawnfest that was book 2.
In we moved to Syracuse, New York, where we live now with assorted cats, a number of squirrels, birds, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and woodchucks visiting our very small yard. Emperor Mage is a fantasy novel by Tamora Piercethe third in a series of four books, The Immortals. I’ve read this series more times than I can remember, but I still feel the same intensity that I recall from the first time – and the last few chapters of this book still have a h I’ve been doing some thinking and have come to a conclusion that, I suppose, should have been obvious a long time ago: I second what I said after Wolf Speaker.
Daine’s ability to communicate with animals and to shape shift into animal form is comparable with that of characters in Andre Norton’s renown tales involving human-animal communication. The first book, Wild Magic, really impressed me. I loved Tamora Pierce’s description of the different types of dinosaurs. I really like the character of Daine.
I’m a little confused about the logistics of the palace. There also appear to be some meddling gods unhappy with the situation. With them is Numair, once the Emperor’s best friend and now his sworn enemy, Daine, who has been chosen to come in order to heal the Emperor’s beloved and sickly birds, and Kitten the baby-dragon, whom the Emperor is intensely curious about.
This is probably my favourite quartet, and I am now off to read the fourth book. I do wish other books in the series were more like this one other aspects, though.
Those stories are missing, leaving the rest of it unmoored.
Obviously, I’ve read a lot of books in 54 years! Daine continues to develop and mature as the novel progresses, both in terms of her magical powers, her understanding that good and evil are not necessarily based solely on what group one belongs to, and that her heritage is still veiled although small rents are appearing, yielding enticing clues about her past and potential glimpses provide shadowy hints about the identity of her unknown father.

Daine is to heal the emperor’s birds while the delegation attempts to forge a peace treaty. Wild Magic is dear to me because it was my first book by Pierce, but Emperor Mage makes my heart soar every time.
I love the expanding of the universe. It’s not even the sharp, wry dialogue that I adore. First of all, we get this: The nice thing about it was that it was like reading this book for the very first time – I remembered absolutely nothing about the plot!
Paperbackpages. Getting out of Tortall and the interactions with other lands is so wonderful. Daine also begins to discover new and unexpected dimensions to her powers, which have some very interesting results, while also using what she learnt in the previous instalment, her shape-shifting powers.
You don’t actually get to see their relationship shift and strengthen.
And I really liked the hammered home strongly mentions of the emperor caring about his birds but totally cavalier about his citizens, to the point that he was willing to make greater concessions after Daine healed his birds. Emperor Ozorne Muhassin Tasikhe has been neglecting the worship of the gods, primarily the chief Goddess of Carthak, the Graveyard Hag.
They send Daine along as a gesture of goodwill, as delegates of Tortall are invited to come and negotiate peace talks. This series has everything it has magic, action, romance and a story which draws you in and y This and my other reviews can be found at http: This is the second quartet by author Tamora Pierce.

Don’t get me wrong I love romance, but hate when it’s all the story is really a Scary with you is better than scary without you Daine, Numair and others are traveling to Carthak to go to peace meetings between Carthak, Tortall and others. And while the stories are similar, there are differences. The age different is absolutely a mess, and Daine seems to have a complete lack of close relationships with anyone pieece isn’t an animal or Numair, but I can’t help myself.
