A professor once told me, “There is nothing you could possibly discover that hasn’t already been thought up by 19th century Germans. This book was a pleasurable read with some true gems tucked inside. The dynamics of the stark role reversal brought on by the French Revolution–the German elite as victims, mourning the loss of civilized society–elicits from Goethe a humorous and pointed social commentary.

I could have done without some of the ghost stories, but the final fairy tale is a novel of its own. The unlikely turn of events forces the reader to stretch her mind,quickly abandoning the realm of feasibility and embracing the style of true folklore, that takes on its own rules of reason and needs no excuses for the characters’ behavior. If it’s meant to be an allegory, it was totally lost on me, but I was fascinated nonetheless. The imagination is a fine faculty, only I do not like to see it applied to things that have really happened.
The amusing figures it creates are welcome when they are beings that belong to their own world; allied to reality it mostly produces nothing but monsters and is then, it seems to me, usually in conflict with common sense and reason.
It should not, I feel, become attached to a subject, it should not try to force a subject on us; when it produces a work of art it should play on us, like music, move us inside ourselves in such a way that we forget there is something outside us producing that effect.
I do enjoy writing them, but I may reduce their scope if it appears I am my own audience. View all 4 comments.

You really want to know unterhaltungrn happens to two characters unterhaltungwn – and the book ends without ever returning to the main characters. However, there is a series of sub-stories that the characters are telling one another.
None of them have endings either. It is a fantasy piece – almost a fairy tale – and has the best story so he was making progress as a writer! It would actually make a good basis for Typical Goethe. It would actually make a good basis for a screenplay. The tales reflect the political turmoil of the s amd one upper class family’s struggles to divert themselves with quiet entertainment, and gorthe some moral lessons as well.
The last story, the fairy tales, is however oddly out of place in terms of tone and style with the rest of the book.
